CULL is a new show from Melbourne-based company, The Very Good Looking Initiative (TVGLI). Described as a darkly comedic look at the world of social media, CULL is part dance show, part physical theatre, part confession.
Creators/provocateurs Honor Wolff and Patrick Durnan Silva took time out to tell Seesaw more about their work, ahead of their Fringe World debut.

Seesaw: When did you first know that you wanted to be artists?
TVGLI: We didn’t realise what being an artist was until we were out of university – poor, working hospitality and yet still tirelessly putting time, effort and money into a project that wouldn’t necessarily pay us back. Now we’re in too deep and we can’t go back.
Seesaw: Where did you train?
TVGLI: We both studied acting at Federation University Australia Arts Academy for three years. It was a really hard-working but loving environment that nourished the theatrically different. We continue to do workshops and classes to keep up our practice. We also watch a lot of TV, YouTube and porn.
Seesaw: Describe your artistic practice…
TVGLI: Staying up until three in the morning in our living rooms, creating tragic characters and sketches that will never see the light of day and then remembering them two years later and putting them in our show that is already running overtime.
Seesaw: Career highlight so far?
TVGLI: Performing at The Coopers Malthouse and having hot people like our show.
Seesaw: Career lowlight?
TVGLI: Those hot people turning out to be relatives. Our mums love us, but not in a good way.
Seesaw: What has been your funniest career moment so far?
TVGLI: Patrick discovering he’s colour-blind.
Seesaw: What made you decide to give Fringe World a whirl?
TVGLI: The improvisational principle ‘Yes, AND’…can we afford this? Nah, we saw a lot of our Melbourne friends coming back from FRINGE WORLD saying that they had an amazing time and that the Perth peeps were incredibly supportive, so we got #fomo.
Seesaw: Tell us about CULL!
TVGLI: It’s a comedic, dark look into the world of social media. On stage we satirically bear all of our insecurities and pull back our Facebook facades and foreskins. There’s also tonnes of dance, loud music and shit costume changes.
Seesaw: Aside from your show, what are you looking forward to seeing/doing at Fringe?
TVGLI: We wanna get loose in the Pleasure Garden, party hard with our Blue Room Theatre fam, take a cliché selfie in front of that large FRINGE WORLD neon light we keep seeing, finally catch the BRIEF boys and terrorise all the bar staff.
Seesaw: What is your favourite playground equipment?
TVGLI: Asphalt
‘CULL’ plays The Blue Room Theatre, 27 January – 3 February.
