Music: Friday Night Baroque : A Night out with Handel and Purcell

21 December @ St Patricks’s Church, Mt Lawley ·
Presented by A Baroque Collective ·

A selection of Australia’s most spectacular musicians, hailing
from WASO, WAAPA, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, La Petite
Bande and beyond, have come together as A Baroque Collective for
‘Friday Night Baroque’.

This holiday season, the Collective is delighted to welcome guest
soprano Kate Browton (of the Hilliard Ensemble), for our special
holiday concert. Performing some spectacular music by Baroque masters
Händel and Purcell on period instruments, we want to take you back in
time – back to when audience members went to the theatre to ‘see and
be seen’; and back to when listeners fainted and became hysterical
due to the beauty of the music.

Join us on Friday the 21st of December for a moving and beautiful
evening – the perfect way to celebrate the festive season!

Terminal Lucidity

Visual Arts: Terminal Lucidity

7 – 21 December @ Whitespace,  Fremantle ·
Presented by George Howlett ·

George Howlett’s 2018 solo exhibition Terminal Lucidity presents
new multi media artworks incorporating painting, neon lighting and
sculptural elements. Playing on the definition of Terminal Lucidity,
his work reflects on moments of mental clarity artists experience
when working alone in their studios. Humour is often a source of the
dialogue in George’s work and installations.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsor Write Light Neon, George has been
able to achieve a well-conceptualised body of work through custom-designed
lighting in combination with paint and colour. The effects are minimal
and stunning. In contrast to the minimal painted works are a series of
custom-made neon faces that form part of a collaborative project between
Howlett and Write Light Neon.

To reinforce the ideas within his work George has created a purpose-built
space that truly has become the blank canvas of galleries. Through kind
sponsorship from Dulux Australia and D+D Property Group, he has upgraded
the existing floors and installed walls to better accommodate ambitious
exhibitions. His install effort has set the scene to showcase future artists
work in the newly opened Whitespace in Pakenham Street, Fremantle. Opening
on the 7th December 2018, guests are welcome to explore a visually bold,
playful, colourful and all encapsulating exhibition.

Opening night 7 December 6:30pm-9:30pm
Exhibition runs until 4 pm 21 December
Gallery will be open daily 10am-4pm throughout the duration of the exhibition

Film: Y Tu Mamá También / Cine Latino Film Festival Closing Night

16 December @ Cinema Paradiso ·
Presented by Palace Cinemas ·

To close the festival on Sunday 16th December, Alfonso Cuarón’s funny,
hot-blooded, and moving road comedy Y Tu Mamá También will screen in a
2K restoration. Enjoy the night with a drink on arrival.

Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity, Children of Men)
had his breakout hit with the perfectly balanced road comedy, Y tu mamá
también starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. The film tells the
story of Julio and Tenoch, seventeen-year-olds who have had a long
friendship despite their different backgrounds. With their respective
girlfriends away in Europe, Julio (Bernal) and his upper-class friend
Tenoch (Luna) are looking forward to a summer full of fun and foolishness.
During a wedding, they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú) — the 28-year-old wife
of Tenoch’s scholarly cousin — and try to convince her to go on a road
trip to a made-up beach paradise the two claim is on the Oaxacan coast.
To their surprise, Luisa — who is looking to escape her troubled life
for a spell — agrees to go along. Two days into the trip, tension starts
to build between the two friends, who are not-so-quietly vying for her
affection. Soon simmering jealousies boil over into savage arguments,
threatening to completely destroy their friendship.

Shot beautifully by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and interspersed with
small visual reminders of political unrest juxtaposed with the natural
beauty of the country; this is a film not to be missed.

Music: Handel’s Messiah

22 December @ Perth Concert Hall ·
Presented by Perth Symphonic Chorus ·

A joyous Christmas tradition! The wonders of this glorious oratorio are made almost endless when directed by Perth’s own brilliant choral director Margaret Pride OAM.

Exquisite arias such as ‘I Know My Redeemeth Liveth’ and ‘Rejoice!’ are contrasted with the majesty of arias like ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’ and ‘Thus Saith the Lord’.The real genius of this work, however, is revealed in the great choruses sung to perfection in baroque style by Perth Symphonic Chorus, and accompanied by our very own nationally recognised Perth Baroque Orchestra led by the exceptional violinist Paul Wright with soloists Janet Todd (soprano), Robert Macfarlane (Tenor), Tobias Cole (Counter-Tenor), James Clayton (Bass).
