Film: 2019 German Film Festival Closing Night

12 June @ Cinema Paradiso ·
Presented by Palace Cinemas ·

88 years after its initial release of The 3 Penny Opera (1931), we celebrate the closing of the festival with this cinematic delight. Join us for a glass of wine before the film, as we say auf Wiedersehen to the festival.

Closing the Festival is the celebrated classic 1931 film version of Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera, which itself rivals the adored Weimar-era theatrical sensation. German auteur G. W. Pabst (Pandora’s Box, 1929) places audiences firmly in the impoverished back alleys of Victorian London alongside our underworld anti-hero Macheath (Mackie, or “Mack the Knife”), a vicious, amoral thug who sees himself as nothing more than a legitimate entrepreneur. When Macheath marries Polly Peachum without the permission of her father, Jonathan Peachum, the “beggar king” of London and a fellow businessman, a bitter rivalry ensues.

The selection complements Festival screenings of the recent Mack The Knife – Brecht’s Threepenny Film and its brilliant depiction of the controversy surrounding the making of this famous movie production. With its palpable evocation of corruption and dread, set to composer Kurt Weill’s irresistible score, this original cinematic interpretation remains a benchmark of early sound cinema.

Film: 2019 Moro Spanish Film Festival Closing Night

15 May @ Cinema Paradiso, Northbridge ·
Presented by Palace Cinemas ·

Almodovar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown will close the festival this year. Join us for a drink before the film screening. One of the biggest box-office hits in Spanish history, this sexy romp about obsessive love helped launch the careers of its director and renowned Spanish stars Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas.

Carmen Maura is exceptional as Pepa, a woman cruelly abandoned by her longtime lover Iván (Fernando Guillén), who is unaware that she is pregnant with his child. Overcome with desperation, and on the verge of suicide-by-cocktail, Pepa makes hysterical (and dangerous) attempts to track down her elusive lover. Along the way, she confronts the various women in Iván’s life, including his crazy wife, Lucía (Julieta Serrano), by whom he has fathered a now-grown-up son, Carlos (Banderas). At the same time, Pepa has to deal with a manic friend, terrified the police are looking for her because of her boyfriend’s criminal activities. This combustive mix of eccentric characters and scenarios result in a delightful and deliriously deranged comedy that celebrates female camaraderie in all its forms.

Film: Y Tu Mamá También / Cine Latino Film Festival Closing Night

16 December @ Cinema Paradiso ·
Presented by Palace Cinemas ·

To close the festival on Sunday 16th December, Alfonso Cuarón’s funny,
hot-blooded, and moving road comedy Y Tu Mamá También will screen in a
2K restoration. Enjoy the night with a drink on arrival.

Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity, Children of Men)
had his breakout hit with the perfectly balanced road comedy, Y tu mamá
también starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. The film tells the
story of Julio and Tenoch, seventeen-year-olds who have had a long
friendship despite their different backgrounds. With their respective
girlfriends away in Europe, Julio (Bernal) and his upper-class friend
Tenoch (Luna) are looking forward to a summer full of fun and foolishness.
During a wedding, they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú) — the 28-year-old wife
of Tenoch’s scholarly cousin — and try to convince her to go on a road
trip to a made-up beach paradise the two claim is on the Oaxacan coast.
To their surprise, Luisa — who is looking to escape her troubled life
for a spell — agrees to go along. Two days into the trip, tension starts
to build between the two friends, who are not-so-quietly vying for her
affection. Soon simmering jealousies boil over into savage arguments,
threatening to completely destroy their friendship.

Shot beautifully by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and interspersed with
small visual reminders of political unrest juxtaposed with the natural
beauty of the country; this is a film not to be missed.

Suspiria Synopsis:
In 1977 Suspiria terrified audiences worldwide. Now, just over forty years later, Dario Argento’s neon-soaked nightmare returns to the big screen in dazzling 4K, showcasing the film’s vibrant Technicolour palette in all its deep red (and green, blue and gold) glory.

Ballet student Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) arrives at a prestigious dance academy in Freiburg, a school plagued by gruesome and supernatural happenings. Soon students begin to die in horrific circumstances – is Suzy next, and can she uncover the academy’s sinister secret before it’s too late?

Italian horror (‘giallo’) auteur Dario Argento’s visionary symphony of terror, Suspiria (co-written by his then-girlfriend Daria Nicolodi) abandoned the traditional conventions of giallo in favour of a witchy brew of magic and mystery. A ground-breaking masterpiece beloved for its bravura use of colour and hallucinogenic storytelling, Argento’s masterpiece is the most famous Italian horror film of all time. This year, before you see Academy Award-nominated director Luca Guadagnino’s (Call Me By Your Name, A Bigger Splash) hotly anticipated remake, give yourself over on Closing Night, to the incomparable beauty and horror of Dario Argento’s Suspiria.
