Seesaw’s emerging workshop welcomes WA’s next generation of arts writers

We are thrilled to be working with young WA writers, aged between 18-25, through Seesaw’s Emerging Writers Workshops. This free program is designed to help young emerging arts writers improve their skills and confidence to review and share stories of the amazing work being done by artists and organisations around the State.
With the program about to be underway, we want to give a big welcome to the to the seven participants for 2026. They are Harry Oxley Betlehem, April Hancock, Darcy Lewis, Alicia Patrick, Emily McGuiness, and Charlotte Newman.
Our six participants for the next few weeks will be mentored by experienced arts journalist and writer Rosalind Appleby. Across five sessions they will receive editing support, professional development advice and publishing opportunities from the Seesaw Editorial team.
GET TO KNOW THE PARTICIPANTS
ALICIA PATRICK is a Perth based journalist and filmmaker. Her previous work has covered fashion, music, art, the environment, and community. A lover of all things art, she is excited to merge her love of writing, film, and music.
APRIL HANCOCK is a Perth-based writer passionate about telling people’s stories, with a special interest in the arts. She has written for X-Press Magazine and contributed travel features to The West Australian, and is keen to keep broadening her experience across subjects and publications.
EMILY MCGUINESS is an emerging Perth-based writer who was selected for Writing WA’s 2024–25 Emerging Writers Program, where she was mentored by award-winning author Brooke Dunnell. She serves on the board of the Fellowship of Australian Writers WA, was a 2025 Literature editor of UWA’s Pelican Magazine, and is completing a Master of Creative Writing at Curtin University.
HARRY OXLEY BETLEHEM is a Perth-based screenwriter, director and community organiser motivated by building creative community. He runs perthindies, an events group spanning arts, eSports and culture, and is currently studying at UWA.
CHARLOTTE NEWMAN is an emerging Boorloo and regional WA-based creative with a growing interest in arts writing and criticism. Alongside her studies, she is involved in a number of arts spaces across Boorloo.
DARCY LEWIS is a composer and multidisciplinary artist whose music has been performed locally and internationally, including by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. A WAAPA composition graduate now studying a Master of Architecture at UWA, Darcy also writes reviews for Magazine 6000 and is a sub-editor of Pelican Magazine.
About the workshop series
Seesaw, WA’s arts magazine, is offering a series of free mentorship programs to learn arts reviewing, create writing opportunities and promote arts events around WA.
Led by experienced mentors in arts writing and journalism, the training will include workshops and attending at least one event for a mentored review. Workshops will cover how to engage with the works and issues you cover, techniques of interpretation & fact checking, the drafting, editing, and publishing process.
Coverage will be aligned with locally produced arts events as well as touring shows to local venues. Participation is free and mentees will be paid a small fee for their published articles.

What we offer:
- Up to eight (8) mentorship positions including;
- 5 Online group workshops;
- Support, advice, editing and other feedback provided during review-writing process;
- Publication of review on the Seesaw website*;
- The opportunity for commissioned reviews as a Seesaw contributor.
This program seeks to assist young writers to improve their skills and confidence to review and share stories of the amazing work of young artists and organisations across WA. We hope this also will increase wider awareness of youth arts events for the benefit of artists, venues, arts organisations and their many supporters.
